Zürich : Stuck to the ground – climate activists blocked Utoquai
Activists from the organization Renovate Switzerland blocked Bellerivestrasse on Utoquai on Friday morning. An activist glued himself to the street.
On Friday morning at 7.45 a.m., seven activists from the organization Renovate Switzerland gathered unannounced at Stadelhofen station. The activists then blocked Bellerivestrasse in Zurich’s Seefeld.
The action led to traffic jams on the Utoquai, especially in the direction of Rapperswil. The police are on site. The majority of the members of the organization should come from French-speaking Switzerland. The police carried several activists off the street. Two remained stubborn, one of them stuck to the asphalt. However, the road has now been reopened. The activists are now in police custody.
“We must now act for the climate”
This is the sixth action in less than two weeks and the second in Zurich. The activists are calling on the Federal Council to mobilize society for “thermal renovation”.
According to activist Max Vögtli, the organization knows that this is a serious measure. “We don’t want to harm anyone, but we have to act now for the climate.” The climate emergency is an existential threat to the Swiss population and the next generation.
“Given the irresponsibility of the Federal Council, it is my duty as a citizen to take matters into my own hands and demand that he protect the future of our country and the next generations,” says Aline Gavillet, another activist.
Similar action at Wankdorf
The organization Renovate Switzerland already carried out a road blockade on Tuesday. At Wankdorf they blocked the road with cardboard posters. A News Scout video shows how canton police forces dragged the activists to the side of the road.
“It’s a cat-and-mouse game,” said the news scout. «People have a short break at around 8.30 placed on the street in front of the Autobahn.» First, the blocked drivers honked and discussed with the activists. Eventually the police arrived and dragged away the blocking people. “However, as soon as they have been pulled to the side, they get up and sit down on the street once more,” says the news scout.
