107 People Trampled to Death During Religious Event in India(X account)

AS MANY as 107 people were crushed to death during a religious event in the city of Hathras in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday (2/7).

The incident reportedly took place following the preacher at a religious event known as “Satsang” finished delivering his speech and everyone left the venue.

According to the Uttar Pradesh police, the suffocation at the scene is believed to have caused anxiety among the participants, who started running around, causing chaos. The weather during the event was hot and humid.

“A huge crowd gathered at the location. There was no way out, everyone fell and then there was a stampede. When I tried to get out, there was a motorbike parked blocking the road. Many fainted, while others died,” said one witness.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his grief over the tragic incident and ordered an inquiry.

Umesh Kumar Tripathi, chief medical officer told reporters that the incident had left at least three children dead.

Horrific images from the scene have been circulating online, with videos showing injured people being taken to hospital in pickup trucks, tuk-tuks and even motorbikes.

A clip also showed several bodies left at the entrance of a local hospital as relatives screamed for help. (Ant/BBC/P-5)
