13-month-old baby from Vigía del Fuerte died of malnutrition in Medellín

A 13 month old baby who arrived sent to Medellín from Vigía del Fuerte died of causes associated with malnutritionauthorities said.

As it turned out, the girl from the corregimiento San Miguel from this town in Urabá had burn injuries to various parts of his body, apparently due to some procedures that a traditional doctor had done of the Veracruz community.

Still, the minor did not improve and had to be transferred from the Vigía del Fuerte Hospital – where she was initially hospitalized – to Medellín.

Apparently the baby was already enrolled in the growth and development program for being at risk of acute malnutrition since August 2022, according to the authorities.

For its part, the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare described the death of the baby as inadmissible. Director Concepción Baracaldo Aldana pointed out that an ICBF psychosocial team in Antioquia was appointed to verify the rights of the baby’s mother —who is also a minor and would be pregnant— to take the most suitable protection measure and guarantee their well-being.

According to the figures handled by the Dane, this year in Antioquia two children have died from malnutrition in Chigorodóone more in Frontino for the same cause and another in Mutatá.
