Salzburg to Become a Cycling Paradise: Ambitious Plan Unveiled for 200+ New Projects

Salzburg, Austria – November 24, 2025 – In a move poised to reshape urban mobility, the city of Salzburg today announced a sweeping, multi-year initiative to dramatically expand its cycling infrastructure. The plan, backed by over four million euros in annual funding and potential federal/state support, aims to increase the proportion of cycling trips to 30% by 2030 – a significant jump from the current nearly 24%. This isn’t just about bike lanes; it’s a fundamental shift towards a greener, healthier, and more accessible Salzburg.

From Sidewalks to Speed Routes: A City Transformed

The ambitious program encompasses over 200 construction projects scheduled between 2026 and 2030. Building on the 187 kilometers of existing cycling infrastructure developed since 2019 – including 25 main route projects and 48 additional cycle construction measures – the city is tackling key areas of concern. These include busy roads, challenging intersections, and critical bridge crossings. The new strategy moves beyond focusing solely on main routes, encompassing the entire city cycle path network. 52 entirely new measures have been added to the plan, reflecting a comprehensive reassessment of cycling needs.

But what does this mean for Salzburg residents and visitors? Expect to see significant improvements along major thoroughfares like the Munich Federal Highway, Reichenhaller Street, and Alpenstrasse. New connections are planned around schools, prioritizing the safety of young cyclists, and enhancements are coming to routes along the Glan river and central city axes. This isn’t just about adding paint to the road; it’s about creating a truly integrated and safe cycling experience.

Addressing Danger Zones and Expanding Networks

Several specific areas are receiving immediate attention. The notorious “Gas working gases” danger spot in Lehen is slated for a major overhaul, with options including a dedicated bridge for cyclists and pedestrians. Along the Salzach river, existing paths will be upgraded to high-speed cycle routes, addressing the growing demand from cyclists. The “Salzach Plan” flood protection project will also contribute, widening underpasses at key bridges (Staatsbrücke, Nonntaler Brücke, Mozartsteg) and creating clearly defined spaces for cyclists and pedestrians.

The Innsbruck Federal Highway and Siezenheimer Street are also high priorities, with plans for multi-purpose strips, structurally separated bike lanes, and improved intersections. Furthermore, the city is collaborating with surrounding communities and the state of Salzburg on 19 cross-community projects, including a new Saalach bridge and expansion of the Ischlerbahn route. Fourteen of these projects directly impact the city of Salzburg.

Funding the Future of Cycling: A Collaborative Effort

The €4 million annual budget is a solid foundation, but the city is actively pursuing additional funding through the “climate active mobile” program, potentially securing up to 50% of eligible costs from federal and state governments. Deputy Mayor Kay-Michael Dankl emphasized the city’s commitment to a 50:50 funding ratio for new cycle paths on state roads, contingent on incorporating enhanced safety features and accelerated implementation. This collaborative approach demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable transportation.

Beyond Infrastructure: Cultivating a Cycling Culture

Recognizing that infrastructure alone isn’t enough, Salzburg is establishing a new mobility agency, modeled after Vienna’s successful system. This agency will spearhead road safety campaigns, raise awareness about cycling benefits, foster a strong cycling culture, and facilitate public participation in mobility planning. It will also provide support to law enforcement and coordinate initiatives to encourage everyday cycling. This holistic approach signals a long-term vision for a cycling-centric Salzburg.

This isn’t just a story about bike lanes; it’s a story about a city reimagining its future. Salzburg’s ambitious cycling plan represents a significant investment in sustainability, public health, and quality of life. As the city prepares to present the detailed program to the local council on December 10th, the momentum is building for a truly transformative change in how Salzburg moves.
