A new study reveals a close relationship between a common diet and colon cancer
Al-Marsad newspaper: A new study conducted by researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital revealed a link between a common diet and colon cancer.
The study indicated that there is evidence that a healthy diet is the main determinant of cancer survival and prevention, and this is especially true for colon cancer, which often occurs due to poor dietary choices.
According to the new study, a single dietary pattern may lead to colon cancer by altering the bacteria in the gut.
The team found that a Western diet was associated with colorectal adenomas, and the American Cancer Society reported: “Diets with plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains have been linked to a lower risk of colon or rectal cancer.”
Eating red meat (beef or lamb) and processed meat (sausages and some luncheon meats) was also associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
Scientists have offered various explanations for the relationship between processed meat and cancer, however, these preservatives, which are converted to the carcinogenic nitrosamine during digestion, are not found in fresh meat.
Accordingly, experts advise increasing the consumption of vegetables, fruits, fish, legumes and whole grains.
