Moroccan police told Oliver Andrews that half of his money was counterfeit, according to his family
The family of a British national arrested in Morocco said they were concerned for his safety following being left untreated for five weeks.
Oliver Andrews was visiting Marrakech last November and was arrested following being accused of possession of counterfeit money.
The 29-year-old’s family said he denied the charges once morest him and did not get any help from the British authorities.
Britain’s Foreign and Development Office said it had provided assistance.
The BBC asked the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Morocco for comment.
On November 10, 2022, Andrews, who is from Bournemouth, went with a friend to a nightclub on the last night of their trip.
“Pressed”
His family said that the next morning he was arrested by Moroccan police, and Andrews was told that half of his money was counterfeit.
The family added that the two men did not have the opportunity to use an official interpreter or the opportunity to speak to a lawyer.
They also said that the two men were “pressured to sign foreign papers”.
Andrews’ attorney in Morocco, speaking through the family, said the two men were charged with possession and distribution of counterfeit money within Morocco and with forming an organized criminal group.
Andrews’ family said he was diagnosed with heart disease in 2021 and requires daily treatment.
She added that he was not allowed to have his medication until his lawyer was able to arrange her arrival on 16 December.
The family said: “The British Embassy in Morocco and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development refused to intervene.”
She added that the British Embassy in Morocco and the British Foreign and Development Office had been informed of Andrews’ heart condition and medical needs.

“We just want the embassy to do its job,” said Alanna Kornick, Andrews’ partner.
The family said that when Andrews was visited by his lawyer, he was “in a very poor mental and physical condition”.
She added that because he did not take his medication, “his blood circulation slowed down.”
The family also said they had sent money to the embassy so that Andrews might make phone calls, but added: “This money has not been given to him yet.”
“We just want the embassy to do its job and go see him and make sure he’s safe,” said Andrews’ partner, Alana Kornick.
“The conditions he lives in are heartbreaking every day,” she added.
“Disappointment”
Kornick described how Andrews was held in a “little space” with 32 people in a 12-man cell, with no mattress or fresh air.
And she continued, “I received phone calls from him, he was really frustrated and we talked regarding suicidal thoughts.”
“It’s the worst thing because there’s nothing we can do,” she added.
Andrews’ mother, Zoe, said the family “has given up hope of doing anything through the embassy”.
“As a family, we are so disappointed and abandoned by our government,” she added.
“We want, whatever the circumstances, to help with the lawsuit, we just want his safety,” she said.
A spokesman for the British Foreign and Development Office disputed what the family said, telling the BBC: “We are providing consular assistance to two British nationals who have been arrested in Morocco and are communicating with the local authorities.”
Minh Tu Tam ca in white shirt is a single mother, raising a sick child in the US
Returning to Vietnam following more than 10 years away from home in December 2022, the White Ao Dai Tam ca group first opened up regarding the reason for their disbandment and the life of each sister in a foreign country at The Khang show.
The eldest sister – singer Tuyet Ngan – expressed her surprise and emotion when the group was still warmly welcomed by the audience despite their long absence. After participating in a music night with musician Tran Tien, they did not believe that they suddenly became famous on social networks.
In the 1990s, the Three Caes in White Ao Dai lived together at Children’s House in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. Tuyet Ngan is often given a duet by teacher Le Vinh Phuc, and Minh Thu and Minh Tu are duets.
Around 1992, the group “Three Ca in White” with 3 new members was born. They started performing at small stages such as Musicians’ Shop, Youth Cultural House… with the style of “a time to remember”.
“When we stepped out onto the stage, musician Nguyen Van Hien introduced: ‘The appearance of singers in white ao dai – Tam ca in white dress’.
Musician Trinh Cong Son in the audience seats applauded and praised the cute name. Since then, this name has been associated with the singing journey of the three sisters”, Tuyet Ngan said.
Tuyet Ngan, Minh Thu and Minh Tu released many solo and combined albums, of which they remember the Japanese album best.
The album is part of a series of products by a Japanese musician combining Vietnamese vocalists (including Siu Black). During that time, the group spent 1-2 hours studying Japanese every week, practicing pronunciation and singing in Japanese.
Two albums of Tam Ca in White Ao Dai were widely released in Japan, helping the three sisters to be loved by the audience. When they went to Japan, they were recognized by the audience and asked for autographs.
Even when Minh Thu got married, a group of Japanese reporters went to the place to record. MC Nguyen Khang said that with this attraction, Tam ca in white might be called an international star at that time.
‘Distant street’ – Three brothers in white shirt
However, at its peak, the White Ao Tam ca only thought of themselves as “innocent and pure schoolgirls”. The whole group went to the show, the eldest sister Tuyet Ngan always took care of and managed the children, and all the paychecks were asked by her mother to help.
After her mother’s death, their father replaced her mother to continue the work of financial management for her 3 daughters to feel secure in singing. Every week, he leaves 3 pocket money envelopes for his children at the bedside.
When her career was stable, singer Tuyet Ngan got married and followed her family to the US to settle down. Two younger sisters Minh Tu – Minh Thu might not maintain the group’s activities.
In the US, Tuyet Ngan opened a small spa like a dream since she was in Vietnam. After that, Minh Tu also went to the US, settled in California for the health of his son.
The singer said that for 7 years in the US, she did nothing, only spent her accumulated money and focused on taking care of her children.
“In that period, I sometimes sang or edited for church charity programs. The job has a little income, less sadness, helps me relax when living far away from home, “Minh Tu said.

Host Nguyen Khang believes that Minh Tu’s philanthropic activities sow good fortune, partly adding faith and strength to her son to overcome the dangerous period.
Although strong, Minh Tu cannot avoid moments of weakness, wanting to fall. Tuyet Ngan always feels sorry for her sister, hoping she has a shoulder to lean on and share difficulties.
Minh Thu believes that her twin sister has put too much attention and sacrifice on her children, so she no longer thinks regarding privacy.
For nearly 20 years, the three sisters, the three sisters of the White Ao Dai, were sometimes in Vietnam, sometimes in the US, but rarely lived close to each other to bring the group back to life. Because of the geographical distance, they had to delay their desire to sing for a domestic audience.
After returning home, Tuyet Ngan believes that the three sisters need to think seriously regarding re-export. She plans to create her own channel, upload old products and update new products so that the audience has a place to listen to the famous group.
The dangers of UV lamps for nails pointed out by a study
In less than 20 minutes, these UV lamps would cause major damage to our DNA and even the destruction of certain cells.
The risks associated with the use of UV lamps have been known for years. Dermatologists therefore invite tanning enthusiasts to limit or even stop using UV cabins. Indeed, several studies have demonstrated their harmful impact on our skin. However, a new type of object has become more popular: the mini-lamps to quickly dry the varnish on the nails.
Present in beauty salons, they are also available for purchase by individuals. Moreover, they are generally offered at low prices both at major retailers and online merchant sites. However, we did not know until then if these miniature UV lamps had consequences on our health.
Researchers from the University of San Diego have looked into this question. And their findings reveal that these small objects can be harmful for our cells and much more. The full study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communications.
Two controversial devices
First of all, you should know thatthere is a real difference between the lights used in tanning booths and these small devices. Indeed, the spectrum of light does not have the same intensity nor the same effects on the body. However, both objects remain harmful but at different levels.
The tanning booth emits UVA radiation known to more easily penetrate the layers of the skin. These increase the risk of skin cancer especially as their effects combine with those of natural UV. But UV lamps, on the other hand, generate a form of irradiation which attacks the cells in depth.
During their research, the scientists studied the impact of these UV lamps on the nails but also on our DNA. They discovered that these devices increased the risk of hand cancer with repeated use. However, the most worrying thing is that these products presented as safe are actually harmful from the moment they are used.
The harmful effects of UV lamps observed from the first use
On average, drying the nails under a UV lamp lasts between 10 and 20 minutes. However, this short period of time is enough to damage between 20 and 30% of the cells present in the exposed area in the light. After 3 exposures, the figure reaches 70%.
Worse still, the devices can cause DNA damage. The researchers also explain that: some DNA damage is not repaired over time and leads to mutations following each exposure with a UV nail polish dryer« .
This is the first study of its kind on the subject. And if it can raise awareness, the authors believe that it will take several more studies and nearly 10 years of data before consumers are really aware of the dangers of these devices.
