Although the famous Tour de France has been run since the beginning of the 20th century, the first Czech competitor, who was still Czechoslovak at the time, took part in it only in 1987. Probably only cycling experts will remember the name of Květoslav Palov, who emigrated in the 1980s and soon following his premiere participation in the Stará dama ended his career. “Please, does anyone still remember this?” laughed the 60-year-old former rider in an interview for the WeLoveCycling.cz website.

Protecting Swiss Agriculture from the Japanese Beetle: Tips and Information from the Federal Office for Agriculture
2023-07-05 06:00:40
Federal Office for Agriculture
Bern, 05.07.2023 – Since 2017, the Japanese beetle has been spreading steadily further in the canton of Ticino. This pest can cause serious damage, especially to agriculture, and destroy entire crops. At the time of the great departures on vacation, the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) calls on travelers to be vigilant. The Japanese beetle might well be a stowaway on board cars and trains and thus cover great distances before attacking other regions of the country.
The Japanese beetle arrived in Switzerland in 2017, entering our country through the canton of Ticino. This very voracious beetle feeds on more than 300 plant species and poses a serious danger to agriculture, horticulture production and the environment. In 2022, the traps installed in Ticino made it possible to capture no less than 625,606 individuals. The adult insect flies from June to early September. There is therefore every reason to fear that the Japanese beetle will spread to other regions of Switzerland by traveling with holidaymakers returning by train or car from infested regions of Ticino or northern Italy.
Since the Japanese beetle is the size of a nickel, it can easily become a stowaway and travel to other areas where it will spread dangerously. It is therefore crucial to screen your luggage and your vehicle. If you discover a suspicious beetle, capture it immediately to report it to the phytosanitary service of your canton. The Japanese beetle can be confused with some native beetle species, such as the June beetle or the garden beetle; it is therefore important to know what differentiates it.
Distinctive signs :
The adult measures 10 to 12 mm in length; the body is green with metallic reflections, partly covered by the copper-colored elytra. The abdomen has five characteristic tufts of white hair on each side, and two other more elongated tufts at its posterior end. larvae and pupae live in the soil and are therefore more difficult to see.
What to do if you discover a suspicious beetle?
Capture the animal and do not release it. Check the presence of tufts of hair on both sides of the abdomen. If possible, photograph it and note the exact location and the name of the plant where you discovered it. Freeze the insect. Please contact your canton’s phytosanitary service as soon as possible (telephone numbers: see leaflet).

Preparing for the Return of MREs: Operation Marhaba’s Successful and Affordable Transit Operation
2023-07-04 19:30:16
This increase is mainly due to Eid al-Adha, noted Mr. Abdeljalil in his response to a question on “Preparing for the return of MREs” asked by the Social Justice Group, stressing that the transit operation, launched on 5 last June on the King’s instructions, is generally taking place in good conditions, thanks to the joint efforts of all the players.
Regarding the transit operation by sea for this year, the Minister affirmed that his department has worked to provide reception capacity that meets the flows expected during peak periods, noting that 32 ships have been mobilized to operate on 12 shipping lines to connect Moroccan ports with those of Spain, France and Italy, in order to ensure 538 weekly trips with a total capacity of 501,000 passengers and 136,000 cars each week.
In addition, Mr. Abdeljalil indicated that ticket prices have experienced a significant increase at the global level compared to the year 2019, and this due to the inflation that the world is experiencing, stressing that the ministry has recently worked to induce domestic and foreign shipping companies to reduce their tariffs for the transit operation, and as a result a number of companies offered preferential tariffs on ticket prices which amounted to 25%.
Operation Marhaba is one of a kind, he added, explaining that it requires mobilizing the necessary logistical means and combining the efforts of several actors so that MREs can travel in comfortable and safe conditions, that either by air or by sea.

Elvis – ein Traum von Graceland: A Sensational Austrian Premiere at Steudltenn
2023-07-05 06:23:05
The Austrian premiere of Hakon Hirzenberger and Rupert Henning’s play “Elivs – ein Traum von Graceland” regarding the last days of the King of Rock’n Roll was a complete success, which the Zillertaler Zeitung team did not want to miss.
After dinner together, a couple of the Cicero girls went to the Steudltenn in Uderns for the premiere on Thursday, June 29th.
A true masterpiece was created in the 700-year-old threshing floor with magnificent costumes and great stage equipment with artfully used video recordings. The whole audience cheered and roared with frenetic applause.
With this piece regarding Elvis Presley, Hakon Hirzenberger and Rupert Henning demonstrate a great deal of empathy for the life and personality of the famous singer. Hirzenberger’s direction is cleverly thought out, stirring and clearly brings out all the different aspects of show business and especially its tragic final days. Martin Bermoser perfectly embodies the mental wreck that Elvis is shortly before his death. With tremendous physical exertion and, above all, a voice that comes deceptively close to Elvis’, he lures the viewer into his spell. But the other roles are also sensationally cast, such as the power trio of his Memphis Mafia Gang (David Fuchs, Johannes Rhomberg and Clemens Fröschl), Charlotte Krempl as wonderful, naive Ginger, Johanna Lindinger as an overwhelmed doctor and touching, albeit dominant mother and last but not least a splendid Andreas Gaida as personal hairdresser and friend.
The Zillertaler Zeitung team would like to thank Bernadette Abendstein once more for the invitation and congratulate the entire Steudl-tenn team on this excellent production!
Further dates: 06. | 07 | 08 | 12. | 13. | July 14th and 15th
