Cutting Out Sugary Drinks: The Link Between Liver Diseases and Daily Consumption
2023-08-12 09:16:27
Are you a sweet drinker? So it is better to avoid that habit. Studies show that women who drink sugary drinks daily are more likely to develop liver cancer and other serious liver diseases. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the US looked at 98,786 postmenopausal women.
A 20-year follow-up study found that women who drank one or more sugary drinks a day had a 6.8 percent increased risk of developing liver disease. The study estimated that 85 percent of them were at high risk of developing liver cancer, and 68 percent were at risk of dying from severe liver disease. They were compared to those who drank sugary drinks less than three times a month.
Daily soft drink consumption, fruit drink (excluding fruit juice) consumption, and consumption of artificially sweetened beverages were examined. The researchers also looked at death from liver cancer, serious liver diseases such as fibrosis and chronic hepatitis.
This is the first study to show a link between sugary drinks and death from serious liver disease. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), says that more studies are needed in this area.
