England won without star Lauren James, who was sent off with a red card, to beat Nigeria on penalties on Monday and advance to the quarterfinals of the women’s World Cup.
The round of 16 match ended 0-0 following regular time and extra time, giving Nigeria a chance to win a women’s World Cup knockout match for the first time in their nine appearances at the tournament.
But England, the European champions, won the match 4-2 following missing just one try.
England became favorites for the title following the elimination of the defending champions, the US team, in a duel with Sweden that was decided on penalties. However, England struggled to create chances once morest the Nigerian defence.
The situation worsened for the English five minutes from the end of regular time when James was sent off, following a VAR review, for violent conduct in stomping on a Nigerian defender.
Referee Melissa Borjas had initially shown her a yellow following falling on Michelle Alozie and stepping on her with her heels when she stood up. There was a rumor among the public when the play was shown on the stadium screens, and following several minutes the yellow was canceled to change it to a red one.
The British media immediately reacted by comparing it to the red received by David Beckham for kicking Argentine Diego Simeone in the 1998 World Cup in France. The red means that James will miss at least one game and maybe the rest of the tournament.

England will face Colombia or Jamaica in Sydney next Saturday in the quarter-finals.

This project is part of the overall approach to creating a brand new center in Libramont near the town hall and the train station. The Commune is thus carrying out a development project for a real urban centrality, near the town hall, which will involve the creation of a central square, the development of a green space, a hall for various activities, games for children, …. A first stage of this project has also been selected within the framework of the European ERDF program 2021 – 2027 and will allow the Municipality to move forward without further delay in its realization.
The Municipality of Libramont-Chevigny wishes to entrust this building to a professional private operator who will be able to invest in its renovation, offer an original and qualitative culinary offer, and ensure its sustainable use. “ This building, in good structural condition, requires renovation work in order to adapt it to the planned future activity, further notes the Commune. In order to support the launch of the project, on the basis of the details of the investment items presented by the tenderer in its business plan, the Municipality undertakes to participate in the financing of the works up to a maximum of €300,000, in priority to bring the building up to standard. The provision of this building known to all Libramontois will be made under a works concession for a basic period estimated at 15 years.

A Ukraine peace conference without Russia – and still with cause for hope for an end to the war? Findings of the appointment in Saudi Arabia.
Dubai/Berlin – 40 countries talked regarding peace in the Ukraine war over the weekend (5/6 August). In the end, four of them are in focus: China, which took part. Russia, which did not participate. The Ukraine, which sees itself strengthened by many individual talks at the summit. And Saudi Arabia – which is celebrating its new role as mediator.

New peace plan in the Ukraine war? Host Saudi Arabia has presented such a plan with other countries, the reported dpa citing diplomatic circles. Part of the plan is the integrity of Ukraine, a ceasefire on all fronts, the start of peace talks under UN supervision and the exchange of prisoners. However, there was no final declaration on this.
The talks initially dealt with the implementation of the “peace formula” of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj.
