When I sat down to play Upstream Arcade’s roguelike action fighting game Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, I was immediately blown away by the art style and animation used in the game. Art style isn’t usually the first thing that comes to my attention when playing video games these days, as I gravitate toward gameplay over visuals, but with the task of adapting this iconic graphic novel into an interactive format, the development team A lot of focus and emphasis has obviously been put into reflecting the art style that made these novels so popular. The world is cartoon-shaded and feels like it might have been ripped straight out of an art book, and it sets the tone for this title. Needless to say, the gameplay faces a daunting challenge to achieve this artistic direction. Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is an action-fighting game with a Roguelike core, which essentially means you take the famous horned red goblin into a dungeon, blasting and defeating hordes of monsters in an eternal loot hunt while unlocking a game full of monsters. A confusing narrative of mystery. Since Hellboy is essentially the weapon itself, the gameplay sees the famous demon punching and kicking monsters most of the time. Of course, you’ll be aided by ranged weapons, whether it’s the trusty Samaritan revolver, or a grenade launcher, but since the combat isn’t designed to be as fluid and fast-paced as an arena shooter, most combat boils down to melee action. Anyone who’s played The Callisto Protocol will immediately feel at home with this style of melee combat, as you have to guide Hellboy, letting him dodge and weave under enemy attacks while countering with light and heavy attacks. It’s not an easy system, as it takes some time to master and get used to, but it feels real to Hellboy, as he’s always been a character who prefers gritty, slow but heavy action over light and heavy Quick hitting martial artist type. Hellboy does have a special move, and once charged, he can unleash a very powerful blow that adds a little depth to the fight. I’ve never been particularly fond of the combat in Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, as it feels a bit steady and counterintuitive, but the presentation is also set in the story, which certainly plays a role in that impression. As for the dungeon layout, it’s pretty typical. You enter a room, enemies spawn, you defeat them, and then you can choose to go to one of various follow-up rooms, some of which will be locked and require a key to enter, others will lead to special and challenging encounters, some into dead ends , others to the next level of the dungeon. If you’ve played any dungeon crawling games before, Web of Wyrd will feel instantly familiar. That’s not a negative in itself, since it’s a tried and true formula, but it does take a little surprise out of the gameplay. Here’s an ad: Having said that, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is definitely one of the most unique dungeon crawlers out there. By combining a roguelike action fighting system with a dungeon system, you’re constantly engaged even though the game does rely rather extensively on its melee action and the niche elements that define this (such as knocking enemies into destructible environmental features) and challenge. The biggest question surrounding the game is whether the combat, art style, and performances of the cast, including the late Lance Reddick as Hellboy, can carry the title, or I fear it might face becoming a trick-or-treater Horse challenge. Fortunately, it won’t be long before we can tell you more regarding the game, as Hellboy: Web of Wyrd will debut on PC and consoles on October 4, 2023. Here is an ad:
