The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi, currently imprisoned in Iran following taking part in the “Women, Life, Freedom” uprising. This movement denounced the situation of women in Iran following the death of Mahsa Jina Amini, a young woman arrested in September 2022 in Tehran for not having worn her veil correctly.
Narges Mohammadi, 51-year-old activist and journalist, is rewarded “for her fight once morest the oppression of women in Iran and her struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all“, declared the president of the Norwegian Nobel committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, in Oslo. This prize “also recognizes the hundreds of thousands of people who demonstrated once morest the Iranian regime“, she added.
More than 500 people died and at least 20,000 demonstrators were arrested following these protests, says the Nobel Prize committee.
In September, the Iranian Parliament, predominantly conservative, toughened sanctions targeting women who refuse the veil, but protests continue, like Narges Mohammadi and three fellow inmates who burned their veils in the courtyard of the prison. ‘Evin in Tehran to mark the death anniversary of Mahsa Amini on September 16.
The Nobel committee hopes Iran will release Narges Mohammadi to receive his award in December, Berit Reiss-Andersen said. “If the Iranian authorities make the right decision, they will release her. She will thus be able to be present to receive this honor, which we hope above all“, did she say.
