Belgians’ Favorite Political Figures: Wallonia’s PS Leading, PTB Surges, Ecolo Disappointed
2023-10-12 15:00:00
Who are Belgians’ favorite political figures?
Wallonia: The first place of the PS, the breakthrough of the PTB, the dismay of Ecolo
The PS widens the gap and unquestionably takes first place in our survey in Wallonia. The Socialists, who total 27.2% of voting intentions, experienced a slight increase of 1.1% compared to the electoral results of 2019 (26.1%).
In second position, the MR collects 20.6%. The Liberals’ score remains stable compared to their 2019 result (20.5%).
Recording the greatest progress, the PTB comes close on the heels of Georges-Louis Bouchez’s troops. Raoul Hedebouw’s party totals 19.2% of voting intentions, or 5.4% more than in 2019.
Far behind the far-left party, Ecolo lands in fourth place in the ranking with 11.6% of voting intentions. Environmentalists fell by 3.3% compared to their 2019 score (14.9%).
Our political survey: Écolo pays dearly for its government stakes
In fifth place, Les Engagés are stable with 11.1% of voting intentions. In 2019, they received 10.7% of the votes in Wallonia.
Finally, DéFi also remains on the same line as during the last elections. François De Smet’s party obtained 4.5% of voting intentions, which represents an increase of 0.4% compared to their score in 2019 (4.1%).

Brussels: The MR triumphs, the PTB takes off, Ecolo retreats
The MR takes first place in the ranking in the Brussels Region, dethroning the PS which came first in the capital during the 2019 elections. The Liberal party brings together 19.7% of voting intentions. It therefore progresses compared to its 2019 score (17.5%).
Relegated to second place, the PS totaled 18.8% of voting intentions. Paul Magnette’s party gains 0.3% compared to its 2019 result (18.5%).
Socialists in a strong position to take the post of Prime Minister
The PTB, which made the biggest progress, occupies third place on the Brussels podium. The far-left party received 15.3% of voting intentions and therefore saw its score clearly increase (+4.7%) compared to the 2019 election, where it obtained 10.6%.
In fourth place, the environmentalists fall: Ecolo totals 13% of the votes in our survey while the party gathered 15.5% of the votes in 2019.
Behind Ecolo, DéFi brings together 6.9% of voting intentions. The party is therefore far from its 2019 result in Brussels (10.3%) and records the biggest decline (-3.4%).
As for the Engagés, they barely exceed the electoral threshold, with 5.1% of voting intentions, losing 0.7% compared to 2019. They are even overtaken by the N-VA, which takes sixth place with 5.3% of voting intentions (an increase of 2.1% compared to 2019). We then find Groen (4.2%), Vlaams Belang (4.2%), Open Vld (3.3%), Vooruit (1.3%), PVDA (1%) and CD&V (0 .8%).

Flanders: Vlaams Belang big winner, Vooruit in clear progress, the Open VLD plummets
Vlaams Belang is at the top of our survey in Flanders. Relegating the N-VA to second place on the podium, the far-right party received 23.3% of voting intentions. It achieved an increase of 4.7% compared to its 2019 result (18.6%).
Although they are in second place in the ranking, the Flemish nationalists have recorded a clear decline. They went from 25.5% of the vote in 2019 to 20.4% in our survey.
In third place, Vooruit made the biggest progress compared to the last elections. The Flemish socialists recorded 16.1% of voting intentions in our survey, compared to 10.8% of votes in 2019. Note that our survey was carried out before the racist remarks made by Conner Rousseau were revealed, but well following that accusations of sexual offenses have tarnished the president of Vooruit.
The CD&V received 13.9% of voting intentions and occupies fourth place in the ranking. It experienced a slight decline compared to 2019 when it received 14.2% of the votes in Flanders (-0.3%).
In fifth place, the PVDA recorded good progress. The far-left party totals 8.8% of voting intentions, an increase of 3.2% compared to the 2019 election when it received 5.6% of the vote.
Groen finished in sixth position in our survey in Flanders. Flemish environmentalists gathered 8.2% of voting intentions, a slight decline (-1.6%) compared to their 2019 result (9.8%).
Recording the biggest loss, the Open VLD tumbled to seventh place in the ranking in Flanders. The Flemish liberals obtained 7.9% of voting intentions. They lose 5.6% compared to their 2019 result (13.5%).

Extended Border Controls with Slovakia: Updates and Impacts on Smuggling Crime
2023-10-12 14:18:11
The border controls with Slovakia, which have been running since October 4th, will be extended in consultation with Poland and the Czech Republic. The Interior Ministry counted over 500 arrests this year.
Border controls with Slovakia will be extended for another 20 days. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) announced this in a press conference on Thursday followingnoon. The department head referred to corresponding discussions with his counterparts in the Czech Republic and Poland.
The border controls initially began on October 4th and were initially limited to ten days. The argument was that smuggler routes should be prevented.
The step is being taken in close coordination with the Czech Republic, which, together with Poland, has extended border controls with Slovakia, as well as in coordination with the Slovak security authorities. The measure once morest smuggling crime was originally supposed to end on Saturday, but will now remain in place until November 2nd.
Crossing the “green border” is not permitted
The police will continue to control the eleven official border crossings with the neighboring country until the beginning of November. During this time, crossing the “green border” is not permitted. According to the Interior Ministry, the checks at the border crossings are carried out specifically once morest criminal smugglers and are intended to disrupt commuter traffic as little as possible. At the same time, the border area is also being increasingly monitored. “The police must be faster than the criminal traffickers who immediately change their routes when their business is disrupted. To ensure that there are no evasive movements via Austria, we are maintaining border point controls. The more than 500 arrests this year alone show that the police are consistently fighting smuggling crime,” said Interior Minister Karner.
Criticism came from the Neos. The fact that the Interior Minister has now coordinated with his Czech and Polish counterparts is by no means sufficient as a reason for extending the controls, criticized the deputy Neos club chairman Niki Scherak. “It is simply not possible for individual member states, including Austria, to keep closing their borders – and then permanently extending these border closures.”
“Good results and clear impacts” in Poland
According to the dpa, Poland and the Czech Republic are also extending their temporary controls on the border with Slovakia until the beginning of November in the fight once morest smuggling crime. In Prague, the liberal-conservative cabinet approved a corresponding regulation on Wednesday evening. This is following the decisions made in neighboring countries, it was said in Prague. Cross-border traffic should be hindered as little as possible. “There are good results and clear impacts. There will be no illegal migration routes through Poland,” Poland’s Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski said on Thursday, justifying his decision. Slovakia continues to carry out random checks at the border with Hungary. All four states belong to the Schengen area, in which there should actually no longer be any border controls.
Since the stricter controls on Slovakia began on October 4th, the Czech police say they have checked 43,749 people. 283 migrants entering illegally were apprehended and twelve smugglers were arrested. According to Poland’s Interior Minister Kaminski, around 550 migrants arriving irregularly have been caught at the Polish-Slovak border since controls began. (APA)
