For the Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, the ice track in Innsbruck-Igls is not an alternative option for the luge, bobsleigh and skeleton competitions at the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan/Cortina. “We have to find a solution to a real problem. I am convinced that we will find it and it will be Italian,” said Abodi, according to media sources on Saturday.
“The bobsleigh track will be in Italy. We have to be patient a little longer, but the solution will be available in January,” assured Abodi. This means that the Igls variant is no longer in play. The adaptation work that would be necessary regardless of a new building in Cortina would cost around 27 million euros.
The Italian Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini had previously campaigned within the government for the construction of a new railway in Cortina d’Ampezzo. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had ruled out a new building if there was no viable plan for subsequent use.
The renovation of the Olympic track in the winter sports resort of Cesana is also under discussion, although it has been closed since 2011. Recently there was also discussion regarding moving the competitions to Austria, where Innsbruck-Igls would be available, Germany or Switzerland.
