2024 Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Major Updates & Tech Review

Mercedes-Benz has significantly upgraded its S-Class limousine, with approximately 50% of the vehicle’s components either improved, refined, or newly developed – totaling around 2,500 parts, according to announcements made earlier this year. The modernized S-Class will arrive in Latvia around mid-summer, according to reports.

The extensive overhaul, marking the 140th anniversary of the automobile, includes a larger, illuminated radiator grille – 20% bigger than the previous design – and next-generation Digital Light headlights featuring innovative micro-LED technology. For the first time in a series production model, the Mercedes star on the hood and the grille itself are illuminated.

Inside, the latest generation MBUX infotainment system integrates the driver’s instrument panel, central touchscreen, and a separate passenger display into a unified digital ecosystem. The system is powered by a supercomputer running Mercedes-Benz’s own MB.OS operating system, which consolidates all vehicle systems and receives over-the-air updates. Personalization options are extensive, with over 150 exterior colors and more than 400 interior color combinations available through the MANUFAKTUR program.

Technological advancements extend to enhanced active and passive safety systems, and a range of powertrain options based on six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, including a plug-in hybrid. The S580 model is equipped with a 537 horsepower V8 engine. A novel supercomputer, driven by the MB.OS, manages the vehicle’s systems and facilitates cloud-based updates.

Ride comfort has also been prioritized. The AIRMATIC pneumatic suspension, in its most comprehensive configuration, features active control and a system that remembers uneven road surfaces, proactively adjusting damper firmness. Standard equipment now includes all-wheel drive (except for the S450 e plug-in hybrid) and rear-axle steering to improve maneuverability. Improvements also focus on rear passenger comfort, with features like video conferencing capabilities, enhanced climate control, and heated seatbelts.

The updated S-Class is expected to offer over 100 kilometers of electric range for hybrid models, and will be available with a choice of six-cylinder engines for both gasoline and diesel variants. The Baltic market will receive the updated model in late spring, according to reports.
