Extreme Cold in Northern Europe: Impact on Homeless and Emergency Aid in Brussels
2024-01-06 16:22:00
Northern Europe started 2024 with freezing temperatures. In northern Sweden, the mercury fell below minus 40 degrees Celsius for the first time in 3 years. Neighboring Finland is also experiencing freezing temperatures. Across the country, temperatures vary on average between -20 and -30 degrees.
In Belgium, the mercury will fortunately not drop as low but temperatures will also drop. After the rain comes the cold. The country is expecting polar temperatures this weekend, but especially next week. The drop in temperatures will be especially noticeable from Tuesday. In certain regions such as the Hautes Fagnes, it might be as cold as -10°C.
Bruss’Help, the Brussels platform which coordinates emergency aid for the homeless in the capital, confirms the activation of the “extreme cold” plan for next Monday, when the mercury will plunge below zero, including in the center of the country. .
“Extreme cold” plan in Brussels: 145 more places for individuals and families from Monday
To cope with the very cold days predicted for next week, 145 additional places will be open to accommodate homeless people.
Furthermore, the Gare du Midi (SNCB) will be kept open if temperatures are negative or at zero, while the Stib will be more tolerant, under these same conditions, of people “wandering” in its stations.
The island, an association helping the homeless, is also on the alert. “We are vigilant and we push our walls to accommodate as many people as possible. All our night centers are unfortunately already saturated but we will try to welcome more people into our day centers to be able to offer hot drinks…” explains Ariane Dierickx, director of the association.
However, this reminds us that winter is not the only difficult period for the homeless. “Homeless people are better prepared for the cold, thanks to certain equipment, large blankets, etc. than in other weather conditions such as heatwaves or rain. When you live on the street, it’s the rain that’s the most painful. It wets clothes, boxes and bags and makes it much more difficult to keep warm.”
The latest count of homeless people carried out in the Brussels region showed a 20% increase in the number of people on the streets between 2022 and 2020. “It is estimated that in Brussels, there are more than 7,000 homeless people and this is not the case. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Among them, we find new profiles such as families with children or Men

The 2024 Prix d’Amérique: Qualifying Trotters, Favorites, and Exclusive Insider Updates
2024-01-06 18:28:30
They will be eighteen, the eighteen best trotters in the world to compete in the Prix d’Amérique Legend Race on January 28 at the Paris-Vincennes racecourse. Ten have already qualified for these world championships and three places are still up for grabs during the Belgian price run on January 14, the last of the 6 qualifying races for America Races PMU.
Five Normandy horses qualified for the Prix d’Amérique…
Five horses trained in Normandy are guaranteed to be on the starting line of the Prix d’Amérique Legend Race. Two from Calvados and three from Orne including Ampia Mede SM driven by champion Franck Nivard who finished second last year in the Prix d’Amérique. The 2024 edition will also offer a second chance to Idao de Tillard, the crack bred in Orne by the Duvaldestin clan, disqualified last year following galloping off in the first turn.

Five Norman trotters have therefore for the moment won their ticket for the legendary trotting race. A place obtained by winning one of the six qualifying events, the last of which the Prix de Belgique contested on Sunday January 14, will allow the first three to run the Prix d’Amérique Legend Race.
For the best trotters who failed in these tests, all is not lost. THE last five places will be distributed according to their earnings. Clearly, the more a horse has a well-stocked bank account, the more likely it is to be selected for the world trotting championship.
…And three Norman trotters among the favorites!
Five trotters including Hooker Berry, winner of the Prix d’Amérique Legend Race 2023, are among the big favorites for this 2024 edition. Of these five favorites including three Normans : Gu d’Héripré (winner of the Prix du Bourbonnais and the Prix de Bourgogne, two of the qualifying meetings), Idao de Tillard and Ampia Mede SM.

De Lijn Basic Accessibility Plan: Controversy, Criticism, and Changes
2024-01-06 13:47:00
De Lijn launched the second and most important stage of the rollout of its basic accessibility plan on Saturday, concentrating buses on the most popular routes, between residential areas and other key areas. This new organization means that 3,200 bus stops will disappear, mainly in rural areas. This represents a total of 17% fewer stops than before the launch of the basic accessibility plan. Where there are few or no bus passages, users will be able to order – via the Hoppin app, the website or by telephone – flexible transport. This can be reserved 30 days to 30 minutes in advance. The budget allocated to “Flexbus” is twice as high (60 million euros) as that previously reserved for buses to order (30 million euros).
“A shame”: new controversy at De Lijn, the company orders… Chinese buses and raises eyebrows in Flanders
The new plan has been the subject of strong criticism from public transport user organizations and mobility experts. “This plan does not only come from De Lijn. It was discussed and approved with the cities and municipalities,” said Ann Schoubs during the presentation of the new offer on Saturday in Louvain. The company assures that it will now “monitor the situation” and that it will make “the necessary adjustments”.
Actions were taken on Saturday once morest De Lijn’s new transport plan in the capitals of the five Flemish provinces. In Leuven, around fifty people, including Groen co-president Nadia Naji and Vooruit MP Bruno Tobback, protested. Signs read: “There will be no Epiphany gifts this year because the three wise men are in the transport desert”.
”People whose usual stop is canceled and who have no alternative pay the costs. We do not understand why the cities and municipalities have approved this plan,” criticized Michel Van Oosterwyck, union secretary at ACV-CSC Transcom.
