A photographer documents the process of making NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, as part of a 12-year project.
A photographer documents “something special”: the complex effort that led to a new space observatory. If you see any photographs of the James Webb Space Telescope under construction, it’s almost certain that Chris Gunn built it. In 2009, Gunn was selected by NASA as a full-time science and technical photographer to join the engineering team at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. He spent 12 years documenting the making of this observatory, from the arrival of the first “hull” to its launch into space. So did Gann photograph every nut, bolt, and mirror? “In a general sense, yes, but I’m sure there are some nuts and bolts that I didn’t photograph,” he answers with a laugh.
“I think the magic moment comes when you start assembling the big pieces, and one can start calling it a telescope,” he says. “When some of the more exotic parts started showing up, like the mirror, I really knew I was on to something special,” he continues. “And indeed it was.” Some NASA managers consider the James Webb Space Telescope “on par with the Apollo missions,” Gunn says. In terms of being something unprecedented.” This observatory is the largest instrument of its kind, and is now located 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. When Gann witnessed the launch of the James Webb Telescope in the town of Kourou, French Guiana, on December 25, 2021, he felt a mixture of joy, anxiety, and hope. “I didn’t shed any tears, but I definitely choked,” he says. “I mean, I was speechless,” he explains. The only other thing I did during that time was maintain my marriage and raise my child; But the project has been a long time coming… and it has been very rewarding.”

Vienna (OTS) – On January 1, 2024, the amendment to the new Media Cooperation and Promotion Transparency Act (MedKF-TG for short) will come into force, which will significantly reform the existing Media Transparency Act from 2012. This will make public sector interventions and media collaborations more transparent, comprehensible and easier to understand in the future.
The details: From January 1, 2024, public legal entities such as the federal government, states and municipalities with at least 10,000 inhabitants must report all advertisements and media collaborations to KommAustria (KOA), regardless of the frequency of publication of a medium and from as early as the first euro. The previous trivial limit of 5,000 euros has been dropped and the obligation to disclose also includes the communication channels of billboard and cinema . If the budget for a campaign exceeds 150,000 euros, a transparency report must be prepared and published. For budget volumes of one million euros or more, an impact analysis must also be carried out. The transparency report should list exactly which media is used to advertise for which amount and with which subjects. The impact analysis should present clearly defined goals and indicators for assessing the achievement of goals. In the event of violations of the disclosure obligation, the penalty will in future be 60,000 euros and, in the event of a repeat offense, 100,000 euros.
All information regarding activations and media cooperation from public legal entities is published in a user-friendly manner on a clear website of KommAustria or its office, RTR-GmbH. The previously valid obligation to delete data following two years will be lifted, which will lead to better traceability.
Media Minister Susanne Raab: “Taxpayers have a right to know how their money is being used by the public sector. Therefore, in the future, every advertisement, every service and every euro spent by the public sector on information campaigns or media cooperation must be reported. This creates 100 percent transparency and better traceability.”
