An investigation by the German judiciary indicates a group of Ukrainians as responsible for the sabotage in September 2022 of the Nord Stream gas pipeline between Russia and Germany. According to a reconstruction by the Wall Street Journal, Ukrainian President Zelensky was aware of the plan but withdrew his consent under pressure from the CIA. The truth is perhaps less imaginative but is there for all to see. The day after the sabotage, in a hearing at the US Senate, Undersecretary Victoria Nuland had stated: “I think the Biden administration is very pleased to know that Nord Stream 2 is now a piece of metal at the bottom of the…

David Reinbacher to represent Austria in 2026 Olympic qualifying tournament
As we enter the second half of August, the return of hockey is definitely on the horizon. The players are in their final stages of preparation before training camps begin, and the excitement in the air is unmistakable.
At the Canadiens, there has been significant discussion about the various competitions that will unfold at camp. The primary focus will be on the blue line, as the young prospects begin to make their presence felt.
Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux will compete against players like Arber Xhekaj, Jordan Harris, Justin Barron, and Jayden Struble, among others.
That being said, David Reinbacher will also be participating, and even though many expect him to spend a significant part of the year in Laval, he has other ambitions. He is focused on making it to the NHL… and he has been training with NHL players all summer to achieve this goal.
What’s interesting is that in just two weeks, Reinbacher will already be back in competitive action. He has been selected to represent Austria in the qualifying tournament for the 2026 Olympics.
Vinzenz Rohrer, another top prospect for the Canadiens, will also be there.
Austria’s roster for the men’s Olympic qualifiers includes David Reinbacher, Marco Kasper, and Vinzenz Rohrer. Marco Rossi is not included.
Austria will face Slovakia, Kazakhstan, and Hungary from August 29 to September 1. The group winner qualifies for the Olympics.

In fact, it’s not entirely surprising since Reinbacher is one of the top talents in his country. Austria clearly wanted him on the team given his skill level.
However, it is intriguing that the Canadiens have agreed to this arrangement… and it can be interpreted in two different ways.
On one hand, it could be said that the Canadiens want their prospect to shake off any rust and gain competitive experience before arriving at the team’s camp. He will participate in three games during the tournament, and the intensity of those games may exceed what he experiences at the Canadiens’ camp.
On the other hand, it’s also possible that the Canadiens granted this permission because they do not necessarily see him making the team this season. It’s worth noting that we are still unsure if the Canadiens have approved Juraj Slafkovský’s participation in the tournament… and in his case, we know he will play in the NHL this season.
The decision the Canadiens make regarding Slafkovský’s involvement in the tournament could provide significant insight into the team’s intentions for Reinbacher in the 2024-25 season.
If the team ultimately allows Slafkovský to compete in the tournament, he will have the chance to go up against Reinbacher on August 29… while Ivan Demidov will also be active on the Russian side at the Puchkov tournament. It could be a notable day for Canadiens fans, even prior to September.
You might want to mark August 29th on your Habs calendar.
If the team permits Slaf to play in the Olympic Qualifier, we’ll potentially see:

Habs Update: August Hockey Insights and Upcoming Tournaments
As we are already in the second half of August, the return of hockey is fast approaching, and excitement fills the air in Montreal. The Canadiens are in the final preparations before the start of training camps, signaling the return of our beloved sport. With intense battles expected at camp, the anticipation continues to build.
Upcoming Camp Battles
The Canadiens have generated a buzz around the various position battles that fans can expect to see during the upcoming camp. Most notably, the competition will focus heavily on the blue line, with young talent stepping up to challenge veteran players. Key names in this battle include:
- Lane Hutson
- Logan Mailloux
- Arber Xhekaj
- Jordan Harris
- Justin Barron
- Jayden Struble
Focus on David Reinbacher
Amidst the developing narrative, rookie David Reinbacher stands out. While many analysts predict that he could spend a significant part of the year in Laval, it is clear that his aspirations are set much higher. Reinbacher has dedicated his summer training alongside NHL players, honing his skills and intensifying his chances of making the 2024 season roster.
Participation in Olympic Qualifiers
Reinbacher’s commitment to his NHL ambitions is evident as he prepares to don the colors of Austria in the Olympic qualifying tournament for the 2026 Olympics. The tournament takes place from August 29 to September 1, where Austria will face off against Slovakia, Kazakhstan, and Hungary.
Austria’s roster for men’s Olympic qualifiers features David Reinbacher, Marco Kasper, and Vinzenz Rohrer. No Marco Rossi.

Strategic Implications for Canadiens
The Canadiens’ decision to allow Reinbacher to participate in the qualifiers opens up various interpretations. Here are two perspectives:
Rust-Breaking Just Before Camp
Firstly, this move could be viewed as a means for the Canadiens to allow their young prospect to shake off the rust. Taking part in competitive matches will provide him with invaluable experience and intensity that perhaps will be lacking in the team’s training camp.
Future Outlook for the Season
Conversely, the organization may believe that Reinbacher is unlikely to make an immediate impact in the NHL this season. Given the uncertainty surrounding fellow draft pick Juraj Slafkovskỳ, who seems poised to play in the NHL this season, the Canadiens’ decision regarding his Olympic participation could reflect their long-term strategy for both players.
Key Matchups to Watch
August 29 could be a significant day for fans looking to witness the future of the Canadiens on ice. Should Slafkovský gain permission to play in the Olympic qualifying tournament, fans could witness a highly anticipated matchup:
- Juraj Slafkovský (Slovakia) vs. David Reinbacher (Austria) at 12:00 ET
- Ivan Demidov (Russia U-23) vs. SKA at 12:30 ET
You might want to mark August 29th on your Habs calendar.
