Greenville, S.C.- The Furman Paladins men’s basketball team has a new addition to its coaching staff. Joe Pierre III has been named assistant coach, head coach Bob Richey announced. Pierre arrives at Furman after seven seasons with Ritchie Mckay at Liberty University. During his time there, the Flames amassed a 177-58 record, securing six regular-season conference titles and four conference tournament championships.
Elevated to assistant coach in 2020, Pierre coordinated Liberty’s defensive strategies and spearheaded recruiting efforts. Richey, entering his ninth season as Furman’s head coach, expressed enthusiasm about Pierre’s arrival. “He brings the values and experience we look for,” Richey stated. He also noted Pierre’s background in building winning cultures and his coordination of one of the nation’s top defenses.

Liberty continued its dominance with additional ASUN regular-season and tournament titles in 2020 and 2021, securing three straight NCAA bids. In 2023,they earned an NIT berth after winning the ASUN regular-season crown. During Pierre’s tenure, Liberty’s 177 wins ranked sixth nationally over that seven-year period.
Prior to Liberty, pierre was a graduate assistant/video coordinator for Middle Tennessee under Kermit Davis. During his two years there, the Blue Raiders achieved a 56-13 record with two postseason tournament appearances. In 2017, they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating the University of Minnesota.
In 2018, Middle Tennessee went 25-8, winning the conference regular-season championship and reaching the second round of the NIT. Pierre also assisted in the skill development of JaCorey Williams and Nick King,both named Conference USA Player of the Year.
In 2016, pierre taught middle school social studies and served as an assistant high school basketball coach at Pawnee High School in Oklahoma. The team started 28-0 before losing in the state semifinal game.He also coached the eighth-grade team at Stillwater Junior high School.
