2,500 volunteers pose nude to participate in an artwork on a beach in Australia to raise awareness of skin cancer

About 2,500 volunteers stood naked in the early morning light on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, to take part in an artwork designed to raise awareness of skin cancer.

Their photo collection is the latest project by American photographer Spencer Tunick, and aims to encourage Australians to get regular skin checks.

Australian legislation has been amended to allow public nudity on beaches.

According to the World Cancer Research Fund, Australia is the country most affected by skin cancer.

Starting at 3:30 local time, volunteers gathered on the beach to take part in the installation, which was made in collaboration with the charity Skin Check Champions during Skin Cancer Awareness Week.

“We have an opportunity to raise awareness regarding skin checks, and I am honored to come here and do my artwork and celebrate the body and awareness of prevention,” said the famous artist, Tonic, in remarks reported by Archyde.com.

“I’ve spent half my life in the sun,” Bruce Fisher, 77, who attended the event, told AFP.

“I think that’s a good cause, and I like to undress at Bondi Beach.”

Tonic is famous for staging nude group photos in some of the world’s most famous locations.
