LONDON (AP) — Three people were killed and three others struck by a van in related incidents in the English city of Nottingham, police said Tuesday.
All three hit by the van were injured, according to Nottinghamshire police. A man had been detained on suspicion of attempted murder.
“This is a tragic and horrifying incident that has claimed the lives of three people,” Police Chief Kate Meynell said. In addition to the van incident, two people were found dead on one street and a third on another, she said.
“We believe these three incidents are related and we have a man in custody,” Meynell said. “This investigation is in its early stages and a team of detectives is working to establish what exactly happened.”
Police had earlier indicated that emergency services were responding to a “serious incident” in the central English city.
Images on social media showed police officers standing by police perimeters at various points in the city center.
The city’s tram network said it had suspended all its services.
Nottingham is a town of regarding 350,000 people, regarding 190 kilometers (120 miles) north of London.
