The Austrian three-man basketball team advanced to the quarter-finals by winning their first match at the European Championships in Vienna at home. The team consisting of Alexia Allesch, Anja Fuchs-Robetin, Rebekka Kalaydjiev and Simone Sill defeated Azerbaijan 21:7 to seal their place in the knockout rounds. After a hard-fought battle, the local heroes lost to Olympic runner-up Spain 14:20 later in Vienna’s Prater Park.
The red, white and red women’s team will take on France on Saturday. “In a 3×3 match, everything is possible. France is a very strong opponent, but in front of such an audience, you can only hope,” Karagiev said in an interview with ORF. “Big praise to the girls, they really implemented a lot of things and the results were clearer than they actually were,” team boss Matthias Linotner added.
Azerbaijan lost 20-12 to Spain in its first group match, with the silver medalists from Paris only extending their lead to Austria by four points in the final seconds. The local 3×3 men’s competition begins on Friday.
