The fire broke out above the Barista, on the first floor. “We sent a pumper from Tournai, a tank, a ladder truck, a command vehicle, an ambulance and a pumper from Antoing. The alert was given by neighbors upstairs, who had smelled smoke. On site, there were traces of smoke on the door to the first floor. When we returned to the apartment, the fire had extinguished itself, due to lack of oxygen. We extinguished the embers,” says Captain Petit.
A person, a lady, was in the apartment. She was taken care of by the medical team but she did not survive. She died of smoke poisoning.
