Jackson defends “intermediate state”: seeks balance between “security and people’s rights” | National

The head of Segpres, Giorgio Jackson, defended the government’s project to install an “intermediate state” that allows critical infrastructure to be protected. Faced with criticism from certain sectors for the military deployment, the Secretary of State stated that a balance is being sought between “security and the rights of people that should not be restricted.”

The Minister Secretary General of the Presidency, Giorgio Jackson, referred to the Government’s project to protect critical infrastructure. The initiative would allow installation of an “intermediate state” involving military deployment.

This Wednesday would meet the mixed commission that will review the proposal of the Executivewith the aim of settling differences between different sectors of Congress.

In that sense, Jackson pointed out that they are having conversations with all the parties and that, as soon as they have “the greatest amount of transversality” among parliamentarians, they will present indications.

“It is important that we try to understand this debate with the utmost urgency, due to the events that have happened during the last month and a half. (…) We have to give the peace of mind that we are going to have expedited routes, that they are not going to be cut or interrupted, and that they are going to be safe routes”said the Secretary of State.

It also confirmed that the project will have urgency for immediate discussion. The idea is that the mixed commission will vote on it on Monday followingnoon, so that it can be reviewed by both chambers between Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

“Intermediate state”: PC worried regarding military deployment

Although the government has insisted that this project focuses on the protection of roads, sectors of the ruling party have shown their apprehensions regarding the military presence.

The head of the Communist Party bench, Karol Cariola, stated that “we are going to deliver a political opinion at the time it is our turn to vote.”

“We have already said on other occasions that we are concerned regarding the role that the military might have in protecting public security”added the deputy.

In this regard, Minister Jackson reiterated that the Executive is looking for the best mechanisms to balance “The use we need of the different public institutions for the security and rights of people that should not be restricted.”
