Legal Medicine: More than 870 minors have died violently

The National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences reported that 874 children and adolescents died violently during the first quarter of this year in Colombia.

According to the report, 163 minors were murdered in the country between January and March, boys occupying the first place with 131 cases, followed by 32 crimes committed against girls.

In 115 homicides the victims ranged between 15 and 17 years; there were also 11 violent deaths among minors ranging between 10-14 years old and in three incidents the victims were between 0 and 4 years old.

According to Legal Medicine, between the months of January and March around nine boys, girls and adolescents died violently every day.

Among those responsible for this type of crime are relatives, friends, strangers, illegal armed groups and common criminals.

The forensic report also states that 437 minors died from fatal injuries of external cause in the country.

109 children died due to traffic accidents on both rural and urban roads in different areas of the country and due to accidents occurring in other places such as the home or due to falls 108 people between the ages of 0 and 17 died.

According to the study carried out by Legal Medicine, the homicides occurred mostly in:

  • Public road: With 94 cases (79 boys – 15 girls).
  • Living place: 20 deaths (11 boys – 9 girls).
  • Montaña – countryside: 15 deaths (13 boys – 2 girls).

Deaths due to transport accidents that left 109 deaths they were specifically recorded at various sites identified by forensic experts.

  • Public road: 74 facts (57 boys – 20 girls).
  • Municipal head: 57 deaths (44 boys – 13 girls).
  • Rural – field: 46 deaths (28 boys – 18 girls).
  • Highway: 17 minors (10 boys – 7 girls).

The motorcycle was the means of transport in which most there were deaths of children with 57 cases (40 boys – 17 girls).
