After bankruptcy and decay, Detroit has managed to reinvent itself as a hotspot for arts, gastronomy, tourism and startups. Some now consider the former “Motor City” to be the most exciting city in the USA.
The story of Detroit’s decline and resurrection is told in different ways. Two African Americans in their forties assess the situation in diametrically different ways. “A few benefit from the so-called renaissance, the others are even worse off,” says one in an interview. “But that’s the way it is with capitalism: it needs poor people to function.” The other, on the other hand, says: «The investors bring new companies and jobs. If you can’t find a job now, it’s your own fault.”
