The French government has apologized to Liverpool fans, after the chaos outside the Stade de France last Saturday led to many not being able to watch the Champions League final as planned.
So far, the French authorities have largely blamed Liverpool fans for some of the problems, noting that fake tickets were circulated among them, while the European Football Association (UEFA) stated at the same time that the match, which ended with Real Madrid winning with a goal, was delayed. For more than 30 minutes due to the late arrival of fans.
But Olivia Gregoire, a spokeswoman for the French government, said Wednesday after a cabinet meeting: “I apologize. Can we do things better? yes”.
Gregoire stressed that French President Emmanuel Macron wanted the investigations into the chaos to be transparent.
Gregoire added that two investigations are underway with the aim of not repeating this incident during the Paris Olympics in 2024, and UEFA has commissioned a report.
French broadcaster BFM revealed that Macron is angry with Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin for initially blaming Liverpool fans.
Police in the French capital, Paris, which recorded more than 100 arrests and injured 230 people during the final match, were criticized by Liverpool fans for accusing them of using harsh methods.
