Founder of CloudFret
Cloudfret recently raised $1 million, with the aim of building the No. 1 freight network between Europe and Africa. Its founder reveals his ambitions and gives us his opinion on the situation of the transport market.
What is the origin of the creation of CloudFret, and what problem do you want to answer?
CloudFret was born from the observation of empty returns of goods transport trucks. 30% of heavy goods vehicles circulating without a load is an economic and ecological aberration. A loss of turnover for transporters and a disaster for the environment, especially since transport is the second most polluting sector in the world.
How do you judge market behavior as of today?
The transport market is highly fragmented and opaque. 90% of the companies there are family-sized and have less than two trucks. The margins and prices charged are opaque and not very uniform. These companies are facing commercial difficulties. Unable to access customers directly, they are forced to go through traditional freight brokers who charter for companies.
This intermediation, little controlled, is in fact carried out by individuals without authorization to practice this regulated profession, which thus harms the quality of service and creates a fracture in the confidence of the actors of the sector with problems of unpaid debts, insolvency and reliability… As a result, carriers find themselves destitute and some file for bankruptcy due to lack of sufficient resources to develop their activities.
Who is behind the implementation of the CloudFret digital platform?
I was behind the creation of CloudFret, with one objective, that of reducing empty truck returns in a collaborative way. With the help of my partner and the support of our first investor, we were able to carry out the first transactions and retain a large community of reliable carriers.
What is the added value of the forthcoming launch of the marketplace and who will your partners be in terms of insurance, fuel, etc.?
The objective of the launch of the marketplace is to expand our activities by integrating road transport spot offers as well as maritime requests and to onboard more carriers in our connected community.
Note that it will soon benefit from additional services such as a fuel card (with discount and deferred payment) and goods insurance at the best market price. This marketplace will democratize access to freight tenders by providing transparency in transactions.
Your prospects are ambitious, and you speak of new investors. give us more any details in this regard?
After completing a pre-seed at 10 MDH, we are already preparing the seed round and are going on a roadshow on July 14 and 15 in Greece to convince new international investors to join the round, such as General catalyst, Accel, Hedosophia, Softbank , Insight partners, Global founders capital, Eurazeo and others. The goal is to raise more funds and invest massively to gain a greater share in the freight market between Europe and Africa.
The extent of Cloudfret
Launched in 2021, CloudFret has already won over a reliable community of Moroccan and Spanish carriers with a fleet of 4,000 trucks. Its objective is to have 10,000 active trucks by 2023. In addition, as of today, the company has 58 regular customers on the shipper side, present in six countries: Spain, Morocco, Senegal, Portugal, France, and Italy.
It offers them the ability to digitize their transport orders, track and manage their shipments and easily access a reliable and extensive network of carriers. The startup brings transparency to freight transactions, and enables shippers to achieve economies of scale, carriers to generate additional revenue, and the environment to breathe better thanks to the optimization of kilometers traveled at empty by trucks.
