In the Mediterranean, Europe’s first wired underwater observatory is ready to open your eyes

It is 9 p.m. when cries of wonder burst out in the conference room of the Pourquoi-Pas?, the oceanographic research vessel of the French Institute for Sea Research (Ifremer). Scientists and divers debrief the day’s dive. On the screen, the image of a tripod fish takes shape on the marine sediments, at a depth of 2400 meters. Placed on its long fins as on stilts, Bathypterois grallator remains motionless in the light projected by the Nautile submarine exploring 40 kilometers off the coast of Toulon.
