BOSTON (SID) – Former Masters and US Open champion Dustin Johnson has become the first American to win a tournament in the highly controversial LIV Golf series. The 38-year-old prevailed in the play-off in Boston/Massachusetts against Chilean Joaquin Niemann and Anirban Lahiri from India and thus secured the proud prize money of the equivalent of 4.05 million euros.
World No. 2 Cameron Smith, reigning British Open winner, was a stroke behind in tied fourth. Martin Kaymer from Mettmann shared 21st place.
The series is financed by Saudi Arabia with astronomically high sums and is therefore heavily criticized. The tournament in Boston was the fourth this year and in this context.
