Gallen’s streak ends in D’Backs win over Rockies

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

Zac Gallen retired the first nine batters he faced to extend his scoreless innings streak to 44 1/3 innings, the seventh longest in major league history, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-6 on Sunday. Colorado Rockies.

Gallen (12-2) struck out 11 in six innings to win for the seventh time in his last eight starts. He passed Brandon Webb with a scoreless first inning to set a franchise record with 42 1/3 innings; Webb’s mark was in 2007.

Gallen retired the next six batters, but Colorado’s three straight singles to lead off the fourth, the last by CJ Cron to drive a run to the plate, ended the streak. It was the first run he had allowed since Aug. 2 at Cleveland.

Elehuris Montero doubled later in the fourth inning.

Gallen fell two outs short of tying Sal Maglie (45 in 1950) for sixth in all-time scoreless streaks in history.

Orel Hershiser holds the record with 59 innings.

Starter Ryan Feltner (2-8) carried the setback, allowing four runs in 2 2/3 innings.

For the Diamondbacks, the Dominicans Ketel Marte 1-1 with two RBIs, Sergio Alcántara 3-1 with a run scored and Geraldo Perdomo 1-0 with a run scored. Puerto Rican Emmanuel Rivera 5-2 with a run scored.

For the Rockies, Venezuelan Yonathan Daza 4-2 with two runs scored. Dominican Elehuris Montero 4-1 with two RBIs.
