Argentina became the venue for the World Cup at a time when a young wonder boy started hitting the ball and started attracting attention. The 17-year-old was not considered for the World Cup squad by coach Cesar Luis Menotti, despite earning a place in the Under-20 national team with his goalscoring prowess in the Argentinos Juniors. The coach observed that the teenager could not handle the pressure of a big fair in his own country. And so the teenager became an outsider to World Cup success on home soil. He is Diego Maradona, who later became the star of Argentina and world football. Diego also managed to single-handedly lead Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup.
