In Belgium, a bakery said it had to go out of business after its electricity bill fell from 1,860 to 11,836 euros per month.
Like households, businesses are also strongly impacted by the explosion in energy prices.
“Here, the hard moment has arrived… It is time, in our turn, to thank our government for its inaction and its indifference”: this is the message from the Dumont bakery spotted by our colleagues from 7sur7. Located in Vencimont, not far from the Franco-Belgian border, north-east of Libramont, the establishment warns: “If the political world does not set limits and does not take decisions commensurate with the cataclysm in which we are find, you will soon have no more open bakeries in Belgium.”
Readjustment of monthly installments
Before giving explanations: “At the beginning of 2021, we paid 1,342 euros per month for our electricity consumption”, indicating that such an establishment notably operated oven and machines between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. per day. “At the beginning of 2022, we had gone to 1,860 euros / month”, pushing the bakery to pass on the increase to the price of bread (+20 cents).
“And then, comes this month of September 2022”. The owner discovers “an adjustment bill estimated at 46,000 euros and a readjustment of our monthly installments set at 11,836 euros”. Or +536%! “It’s not an ‘increase’…it’s an assassination! The end of a profession… and the lives that go with it! he laments.
A bread sold at 17 euros?
Impossible to ask customers to make an effort, “your white square should be sold for €16.80 to allow us to survive”. “It is therefore with heavy hearts and trembling hands that we write these few lines […] We are unable to continue operating. This Sunday, September 25 therefore marks the last day of activity for our bakery.
