Jupiter-like discovery | Gulf newspaper

Using the Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), an international team of astronomers, led by the University of Geneva in Switzerland, has discovered a Jupiter-like planet orbiting a dwarf star “G”.

The discovered exoplanet, called TOI-5542 b, is regarding the size of Jupiter and 30% larger than any gas giant in the solar system, with a radius of regarding 1.01 the radius of Jupiter, and orbiting its parent star every 75.12 days, at a distance of 0.33 AU from it. .

The planet’s equilibrium temperature was estimated at 441 K, so astronomers classified it as similar to Jupiter.

The satellite “TESS” is surveying regarding 200,000 of the brightest stars near the sun in order to search for transiting exoplanets, so far, it has identified 6,000 candidate exoplanets, of which 256 have been confirmed so far.

A group of astronomers confirmed a transit signal in the light curve of the “G” dwarf.
