Ryan Wintel scored his first goal for Cardiff City when his free kick fell from the underside of the crossbar once morest Wigan, but he will thank his luck as the crossbar was two inches higher than the legal eight feet.
One crossbar was higher than the other at Wigan, and the height difference was brought to the referee’s attention before the match.
British media reported that club officials and match officials decided to go ahead, with no team getting an extra advantage, with the two goals switched at the end of the first half, but Wintel’s last-minute shot secured Cardiff a 3-1 victory on Saturday.
Wigan coach Lim Richardson said: ‘One of the crossbars was two inches high, and the opponent’s third goal was on its way up the crossbar, so you have to do the math.
He added, “That sums up the day for us, doesn’t it?” It doesn’t help you to prepare for the match, but it’s the same for both teams. It’s just a coincidence that the killer’s third goal shot might have bounced away.
Cardiff scored two goals in a different goal than the legal height.
Cardiff interim coach Mark Hudson said he had been told before the match that the problem would take a few hours to fix, which no one wants with fans already in the stands.
“I asked if we might attack this goal in the two halves, but it was not allowed,” he added with a laugh.
