NEW YORK — An NYPD officer is recovering after suffering a terrifying injury while in the middle of training at the Queens police academy, police said.
The Emergency Services Unit was conducting the exercise shortly after noon Thursday, in which the officer repelled from a helicopter about 20 feet in the air.
As he starts to go down, he and the repelling line fall hard, crashing to the ground.
His fellow officers rushed to his side. Police said he was airlifted to Jacobi Hospital conscious and alert after suffering a compound fracture in his leg. He is expected to survive.
