Pele is in palliative care because he has not responded to chemotherapy

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

According to Brazilian reports, football legend Pele has been transferred to the palliative care department.

Pele, who won the World Cup three times and is considered one of the greatest players in football history, underwent surgery to remove a polyp in his colon last year and has been in hospital since then.

Pele was taken to the hospital early this week, although his daughter said on Wednesday that the matter was not surprising or urgent, while Pele said on the Instagram photo-sharing platform that the visit is monthly.

But Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper reported on Saturday that Pele was no longer responding to chemotherapy and was now receiving pain-relieving measures in a special hospital ward.

The 82-year-old Pele will not receive any surgical treatment or other examinations.
