Dodgers would be interested in JD Martínez, according to report

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

JD Martinez had some crucial hits during the 2018 World Series, in which his Red Sox won the Dodgers. Would it be possible to see the three-time Silver Slugger now on the other side of the coin? A source told Sports Illustrated’s Pat Ragazzo that the Dodgers have shown interest in the veteran hitter.

Martinez, 35, has been selected to four past All-Star Games, but he hit just .233 with seven home runs and a .701 OPS in 58 games following the midseason break this year. His total 16 home runs were his fewest in a full season since 2013. On the plus side, Martinez hit 43 doubles (a career high) and might be a good candidate to rebound next season.

There are some questions regarding how well Martinez would fit into the Dodgers’ plans. Adding a right-handed designated hitter doesn’t appear to be one of LA’s top needs this winter, and their No. 3 prospect, Miguel Vargas, is a type of player who might be used as a DH and might receive more opportunities in the 2023.
