Murphy to Atlanta, Contreras to Milwaukee in three-team trade

The A’s sent catcher Sean Murphy to the Braves on Monday. After multiple teams showed interest in the 2021 AL Gold Glove winner, Atlanta stuck with the coveted mask.

In what was a three-team trade, the Braves sent left-hander Kyle Muller, catcher Manny Piña, right-hander Freddy Tarnok and right-hander Royber Salinas to the A’s. From Atlanta to Milwaukee came Venezuelan catcher William Contreras and right-hander Justin Yeager.

In addition, Oakland received outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Milwaukee and the Brewers acquired Dominican right-hander Joel Payamps from the A’s.

Murphy hit .250/.332/.426 with 18 home runs in 2022, plus 66 RBIs and a 120 OPS+. He was fourth in 2020 AL Rookie of the Year voting. arbitration process in 2023 and will be a free agent following 2025.

For his part, Contreras was the starting designated hitter for the National League in the All-Star Game. In 2022, he hit .278/.354/.506 with 20 homers and 45 RBIs in 97 games and 376 plate appearances.
