The Ukrainian capital was once more the target of strikes this Friday morning. The metro has been shut down so that residents can take shelter in the stations.
“About 40 missiles were registered in the airspace of the capital. 37 of them were destroyed by air defense forces“, the military administration of the Kyiv region said on Telegram, saying that it had “withstood one of the greatest missile attacks“since the beginning of the Russian invasion at the end of February.
Other cities have also been hit in what looks like a massive Russian attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In total, 60 of the 76 Russian missiles launched on Friday on the country were shot down, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
The mayors of Kharkiv (north-east) and Poltava (center-east) announced that their cities were without electricity following morning bombings.
Faced with a series of major military setbacks in the north-east and south of the country this fall, Russia opted in October for a tactic of massive strikes aimed at destroying Ukraine’s electrical networks and transformers, plunging millions of civilians in the cold and darkness in the middle of winter.
