The controversy generated by the delivery of humanitarian aid from Colombia to Cuba

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

On January 10, it was learned through the social networks of the Colombian Foreign Ministry that the government delivered humanitarian aid to Cuba due to the severe damage caused by Hurricane Ian.

142 tons of items would be donated, including kitchen kits, night and construction kits, and elements for handling drinking water, among others. “Ungred -National Unit for Disaster Risk Management-, headed by its general director Javier Pava, who under his leadership, constant and effective work, made the materialization of this donation possible,” said Nancy Benítez, ambassador to Cuba.

Multiple reactions were immediately seen on social media, some celebrating the gesture of kindness: “Cuba has contributed too much to the peace of Colombia and deserves our full support in these moments of difficulty.”

And others, by disagreement: “There you have the change. They begin to give gifts to Cuba. So many people from the country who are wrong and the guerrilla giving Cuba away, as Maduro does.” read in some of the comments.

The market, as revealed by Semana, includes 12 pounds of rice, two pounds of brown sugar, one pound of coffee, two pounds of beans, one liter of oil, 800 grams of powdered milk, four pounds of lentils, one pound of flour of corn, two panelas, three cans of tuna, two pounds of chocolate, one pound of salt, wheat flour, and one of pasta flour.

Benítez also stated that solidarity will be one of the basic principles of relations between countries, and even more so when Colombia is also vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Other sectors also joined this humanitarian delivery, such as the union of workers of the Barranquilla electric power company that contributed helmets and protective gloves. The markets and the aid that were sent to Cuba left Cartagena.

This delivery has also given something to talk regarding, since the media asked regarding the delivery, and this would have been denied days before.
