The Ghanaian government, in conjunction with trade unions, has agreed to raise the salaries of all civil servants by 30% for 2023.
This was revealed in a joint statement, according to Al Jazeera, as the country struggles to reduce debt and tackle runaway inflation.
The cedi fell sharply once morest the U.S. dollar last year as government spending cuts and central bank interest rate hikes failed to rein in spiraling inflation, which reached a new high of 54% last month.
It was found that the country’s unions, which represent civil servants, began negotiating pay rises with the government in November, with the two sides agreeing on Thursday to a 30% raise at all levels, effective from January 1, 2023.
