UNICEF warned about the risk of an epidemic in Syria after the earthquake

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

The Syrian people first of all need drinking water and food, said Ammar Ammar, a representative of the UNICEF regional office for the Middle East and North Africa. He fears the development of the epidemic in the country following the earthquake.

“We are afraid of an epidemic that might affect millions of people if we do not take action now,” Mr. Ammar told Al Jazeera (translated from TASS).

Several powerful earthquakes occurred on the night of February 6. The magnitude reached 7.8. More than 20,000 people died in Turkey, more than 3,000 died in Syria.

The representative of the UN Secretary General Stéphane Dujarric previously called the situation in Syria catastrophic. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accused Western countries of politicizing the situation.
