Chessboard-like streets, Wilhelminian style houses with facade decoration, Hessenplatz in the center and a colorful variety of residents: This is what the Neustadtviertel in Linz stands for. Located between Landstraße and Gruberstraße, it got its architectural face from the 1860s. What people are proud of in other cities doesn’t seem to be of great importance in Linz. At least the handling of old building fabric suggests that the increasingly functional new buildings must give way.
