The child, Afra, or Aya as she was known at the beginning, was born under the rubble of the earthquake in northwestern Syria, and became a symbol of hope around the world when a video of her rescue spread on the second day of the disaster, February 7.
Thousands sympathized with the “baby Aya” and wanted to give her a new home, but DNA analysis proved her kinship with her aunt Hala, who decided with her husband Khalil to name her “Afra” after her late mother.
