On the corner of Avenida Higienópolis and Rua Albuquerque Lins, in São Paulo, stands an imposing mansion with a white facade, protected by a large iron gate and surrounded by trees. It is Casa Higienópolis, also known as Casarão Nhonhô Magalhães, a listed mansion, which will receive, from March 8th to 11th, the Clan House. The event will gather CLAUDIA, Boa Forma, Bebe.com and Elástica in a series of inspiring experiences and debates on the most relevant topics for gender equality in society.
Balance, physical and mental health, career, parental well-being, luxury, calm, literature and self-knowledge are some of the themes that will make up conversation circles, workshops and presentations – all open to the public. For such special meetings and experiences, nothing is more appropriate than the mansion inspired by the French palaces from the 19th century, located in Higienópolis, an upscale neighborhood in the center of São Paulo. Built from 1927 to 1937, the property was opened in August last year after undergoing a BRL 15 million renovation, funded by Pátio Shopping Higienópolis, the building’s neighbor and current owner.
The construction of what is now the Casa Higienópolis it was commissioned by Carlos Leôncio de Magalhães, known as Nhonhô Magalhães, a coffee baron. The intention was for the mansion to serve as a residence and space for large parties and soirées. However, the aristocrat died before the completion of the work, and his wife and children lived there until 1948, when the property was sold to the Government of São Paulo.
The site then began to have several uses, becoming the headquarters of the Secretariat of Security for two decades, between 1974 and 1994. Its structure, however, remained unchanged: the mansion has five floors distributed over 2,200 square meters, with a garden , chapel and theater, and incorporates different architectural styles, from neoclassical to art Deco or modernism.
Shopping Pátio Higienópolis bought the property in 2005, for BRL 19.5 million, through a public notice that determined that part of the space would be transferred for cultural use, without charging admission, for at least 20 years.
After more than a decade of renovations, Casa Higienópolis maintains the main original structures, such as the Moorish-style door, the English and German tiles in the bathrooms, the wooden floors, the classic stained glass windows and art Deco, the carved wooden doors and the modern-looking amphitheater. To the luxury of yesteryear, contemporary elegance has been added. One of the additions was a bar with a marble counter and walls covered with gold leaf. The garden received a new landscaping, with pitangueiras, jabuticabeiras and other species.
A beautiful, sophisticated and welcoming environment. Ideal for debating, sharing and experiencing all the powers of the feminine in Clan House. Come with us, we’ll wait for you there.
