Croatian authorities on Sunday destroyed a massive World War II anti-ship mine buried on the seabed near a major port in the northern Adriatic.
Local authorities in the port of Rijeka sounded emergency sirens early Sunday, signaling the start of the operation.
They had earlier evacuated parts of the city, while stopping all traffic to secure the area while removing a 690 kilogram (1,500 lb) bomb of explosives.
The officials said that the mine, which was first discovered last June, was at a location very close to the city and that it had to be moved away before emergency teams might carry out the orderly detonation.
