The 2025 presidential election in Cameroon is fast approaching, and speculation about potential candidates is rife.
Among the names mentioned, that of Franck Biya, son of current President Paul Biya, seems to attract attention. But faced with a chaotic political landscape and a divided opposition, can he succeed in establishing himself as the candidate capable of bringing together and overcoming political fragmentation?
The balance of power in favor of Franck Biya is undeniable. As the son of the current president, he enjoys a certain notoriety and a solid political network. In addition, he can count on the support of many influential figures within the ruling party, the Democratic Rally of the Cameroonian People (RDPC).
However, the Cameroonian opposition is struggling to present a single and consensual candidate. The fragmentation of political parties and internal disputes have made it difficult for an undisputed and charismatic leader to emerge. Rivalries between the main opposition parties, such as the Social Democratic Front (SDF) and the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC), have weakened their ability to unite around a common candidate.
No opposition candidate seems, for the moment, to be unanimous within this heterogeneous political constellation. This situation could ultimately benefit Franck Biya. If the opposition fails to organize and present a credible candidate, Franck Biya could take advantage of this weakness to establish himself as a candidate capable of bringing the stability and continuity that Cameroon needs.
The prospect of Franck Biya’s candidacy for the 2025 presidential election raises many questions and debates. Faced with a fragmented political landscape and a messy opposition, he could take advantage of his privileged position to establish himself as the candidate capable of rallying and uniting Cameroonians around a common project.
