Today there are 1.4 billion people in both India and China, but also on the African continent as a whole.” points out Bruno Masquelier, professor specializing in the demography of Africa at UCLouvain. “This combination of circumstances hides very different dynamics. China’s numbers are falling, India’s numbers tend to stabilize, but in Africa it will continue to climb“.One third of global births are African, compared to 17% in India and 8% in China.”Fertility is obviously the first parameter to take into account. There are twice as many children per woman in sub-Saharan Africa as in India“. But the decisive point is the youth of the population, which forms the engine of African growth. In China, the median age is 38 years old. In India, 28 years old and in Africa, 19 years old. Bruno Masquelier concludes: “We do not yet sufficiently realize how much the face of the world is changing. The demographic weight of the current giants will fall, while the world becomes more and more African. In 2100, 33% of the world will live in sub-Saharan Africa. This will offer economic openings that might change the balance of power, but we will have to seize them”.
