Montevideo.- The president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, asked the resignation of the Minister of Housing, Irene Moreira, for directly awarding an apartment in Montevideo to a militant of Cabildo Abierto, a far-right party that is part of the ruling coalition and that He came out to defend the official.

Moreira, who is also the wife of the Cabildo Abierto leader, Guido Manini Ríos, met last night with the president to give his explanations regarding the case and following that meeting he defended his actions before the press.

“The important thing here is that there is a study and an evaluation on whether or not it corresponds, with the requirements of the ministry, to grant (housing). In this case, it is a single-parent family, with a female head of the family and a minor in charge,” said Moreira.

He added that both Lacalle Pou and the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, understood the situation “perfectly” and said that he showed them the file of the militant who received the benefit in a direct award, despite the fact that the woman did not appear at the the raffles provided by the portfolio itself.

“What we wanted was to speak personally, I have nothing to hide,” stressed the minister.

However, the local media published today that Lacalle Pou asked the official to resign, information that was later confirmed by the Cabildo Abierto deputy Álvaro Perrone.

«It is so. The first thing we have to say is that we do not share the request for resignation,” said the legislator in statements to Channel 12 and defended that the minister “acted within the guidelines.”

“We fully support the actions of both the minister and the team,” he said.

In this context, the Cabildo Abierto announced that it will give a press conference this followingnoon in Parliament and the Uruguayan media indicate that the group does not rule out abandoning the government alliance led by the National Party.

The case for which Moreira is accused began at the end of 2021, when the portfolio she directs opened the call to carry out a raffle for homes located near the downtown area of Montevideo.

Despite this call, the Cabildo Abierto militant received a two-room apartment by direct award.

“It is in the interest of Minister Dr. Irene Moreira that the reserved space in the complex be awarded to the family made up of MM and her daughter,” the secretary of the official wrote in an email sent to the national director of Housing, Jorge Ceretta. Gomez, according to a Universal radio investigation.

Sources from the Ministry of Housing indicated that the procedure carried out is not illegal or in breach of any norm, since there is a reserve of apartments to be granted to people in cases of vulnerability and they highlighted that this case met all the requirements. telam
