Coach Luciano Spalletti will leave SSC Napoli and take a break following winning the Italian soccer championship this season. The club boss Aurelio De Laurentiis announced on Sunday evening in a TV show. The 64-year-old Spalletti still has a contract with the southern Italians until 2024. However, there were already signs that the coach would leave the club in the summer. There was a crisis between him and the President.
“If someone comes and says: I’ve reached the maximum, a phase of my life is over. I still have a contract with you, but I would like to take a year’s sabbatical. What do you do then? Are you opposed to that?”, asked De Laurentiis, answering himself on RAI3’s well-known show “Che Tempo Che Fa”: “You always have to be generous.”
Spalletti sensationally guided Napoli to their third championship title in the club’s history this season. It was the first success in Serie A since 1990, when world star Diego Maradona was still playing at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. De Laurentiis said: “Spalletti was a really great coach, he’s a free man, he gave a lot, I thank him and now it’s right that he does what he wants.”
